Finally OBCs will go to IIM!!! :-(

Accepting the demands of the Moily Committee, the chairman of IIM Ahmedabad, Narayan Murthy, has said that the recommendations will be implemented in three years.

He said that to implement the demands, new land was being acquired to expand infrastructure to accommodate new students under the OBC quota.

Earlier, IIM Ahmedabad had said that it would not be possible for it to meet the demands of the committee within the stipulated time period.

However, on Friday, IIMA changed its own earlier standpoint and decided to toe the line taken by the Government to implement OBC quota in premier educational organisations in three years from now.

More investment

In a prolonged meeting of the Board of Governors chaired by Murthy, the Institute has approved an investment of over eighty crore rupees to accommodate three hundred and two more students in three years from now.

"Obviously, all of them here wanted to make this a success because we don't want to be the number two in making anything happen. Remember, now this is a law in the country and no body can argue it," said Murthy, Chairman, IIMA.

The Board had earlier decided to hire even retired faculty to maintain a healthy student-faculty ratio in the classrooms.

Students' rush

It also decided to increase the number of visiting faculty members in IIMA to handle the increasing rush of students - a whooping fifty-four per cent hike.

IIMA, which had stopped taking funds from the government three years back, also now has changed its own resolution and took a resolution to request government for money to meet its expenses for upcoming expansion of campus, in fact, a new campus.

"It is a matter of great concern for the primary reason that we don't want quality of education to the students to go down. That's most important," said Murthy.

IIMA now also looks for hiring faculty from overseas countries and talks have already been initiated with top-most business schools in the USA and Europe.

While the big brother is now toeing the government line, board meetings lined up during next few days for five other IIMs, no wonder, is expected to opt for similar resolution.

Ganguly dropped from Indian squad

India signaled the end of Sourav Ganguly's international career after dropping their former captain from the squad for the first test against England starting on Mar. 1.
The 33-year-old Ganguly, under pressure since he was sacked as captain last year, failed to get a 50 in two innings in the test series in Pakistan, which India lost 1-0.
Chief selector Kiran More said the squad, packed with young players, could mark the end of the road for Ganguly, India's most successful test captain who has struggled with fitness and batting form in the last two years.
"We're looking at the future. We are not going to look back from now onwards," he said.
The selectors also dropped pacemen Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan, drafting in uncapped seamers Vikram Rajvir Singh and S.Sreesanth, who has played in one-dayers.

Wipro buys US-based cMango for $20 m

CONTINUING with its `String of Pearls' acquisition strategy, Wipro Technologies added one more pearl on Monday by picking up the US-based privately-held cMango Inc, a technology infrastructure consulting firm, in an all-cash deal. As part of the deal, Wipro will pay $20 million in cash as well as earn-outs based on achieving financial targets over a two-year period.

cMango, with annualised revenues of $13 million, is focussed on offering business service management (BSM) solutions from BMC Software Inc. BSM involves managing services offered through IT infrastructure and applications. cMango's services comprise business transformation, ITIL consulting, service management solution architecture, implementation, training and support services.

Mr Sudip Nandy, Wipro's Chief Strategy Officer, said, "We see significant value from the cMango team through their potent consulting skills, breadth of service portfolio and domain depth."

"The cMango acquisition enhances Wipro's capabilities in the BSM space, where we have a small presence," said Mr G. K. Prasanna, Senior Vice-President, Technology Infrastructure Services, Wipro Technologies. "Wipro has been working with cMango for the past six to nine months in executing some of the deals jointly," he told Business Line.

Through this deal, likely to be concluded by April 2006, Wipro adds a 120-member strong team, of which some 70 are based at cMango's delivery centre in Pune and close to 30 in Singapore.

Mr Pravin Jain, CEO, cMango said, "This partnership brings together the specialised expertise of cMango and Wipro's wide range of services and extended global reach."

The lawyer for an Illinois woman with celiac disease says his client's condition is set off by eating gluten, a protein found in wheat.

Debra Moffat of Lombard, Ill., is seeking unspecified damages, claiming she suffering heightened gastrointestinal symptoms after eating the fries.

Nadia Sugish of Los Angeles is also suing. She says she's a vegan and would not have eaten the fries if she had known they contained dairy products.

Mark and Theresa Chimiak of Jupiter, Fla., allege in their suit that their five-year-old daughter, Annalise, became seriously ill from eating the fries because she has an intolerance to gluten.

The fast-food giant, which previously said its fries were free of gluten and milk or wheat allergens, added a ''contains wheat and milk ingredients'' postscript to its website's fries listing this month.

Wipro says new GM deal worth only US$27 million

Indian software services provider Wipro said the contract value of a five-year computer services deal with General Motors was far less than the US$300 million reported earlier.Wipro was the only Indian company to be awarded work directly in the latest GM contract. The company's inclusion in the contract was celebrated in India as a major win for an Indian information technology services company.

But on Friday, Wipro issued a statement saying the "$300 million number which has been reported as the value" of the contract "is not accurate".The statement from the company added: "The numbers reported as the value of this contract yesterday were purely estimates of future business we hope to attain with GM and other IT (information technology) suppliers supporting GM's business."General Motors awarded computer services contracts totalling about US$7.5 billion to Electronic Data Systems, International Business Machines, Hewlett-Packard, France's Cap Gemini and the Compuware Covisint unit of Compuware, among others.Wipro on Thursday held a news conference in Bangalore at which Banerjee said revenue from the contract would start flowing from the second quarter of Wipro's next fiscal year, which ends in March, 2007. He did not say how revenue would be spread over the period of the contract.

Wipro wins over $300 million contract from GM

India's third biggest software exporter Wipro Technologies today won a over 300 million dollar five-year contract from leading carmaker General Motors.
"The contract is expected to be over 300 million dollars in the next five years," Suresh Senaati, Chief Financial Officer of Wipro said.
He termed the deal as landmark for the Indian IT industry as Wipro has been recognised as the Tier-I IT supplier by a company like GM. "This reflects the level of maturity," he added.
Wipro is one of the five IT vendors selected by General Motors as part of the 7.5 billion dollar contract announced by it today.
Others having a share in the pie include EDS, HP, Capgemini, IBM and Compuware Covisint.
The contract was up for grabs as GM's 10-year contract with EDS expires in June this year. EDS will continue to have the most business at GM, but somewhat less than what it has today, while HP and Capgemini will increase their existing business, General Motors said.
IBM, Compuware Covisint and Wipro will continue to be strategic IT partners to the company, the automaker said.
As part of the contract, Wipro would be providing application development and maintenance and data integration and migration services to GM.

Workers disrupt airports over privatisation

Airport workers blocked the main approach road to New Delhi's domestic airport yesterday as a strike entered its second day, hitting cargo and hospitality services at airports across the country. Police and paramilitary forces were deployed at key airports to ensure flights took off and landed on time.
Some 22,000 airport workers, mostly cleaners and administrators, are protesting against the government's decision to privatise New Delhi and Mumbai airports. The two airports handle almost 65% of India's international traffic - about 19 million passengers a year
